Discovery Channel SCW in colour series

Post by Kalinovsky » Sat Sep 15, 2018 8:15 pm

There is a Discovery Channel series Spanish Civil War with Michael Portillo. Apart from the obvious drawback, it has a lot of previously unseen colour footage which is pretty interesting. It’s on now (Saturday 9pm) - I’m not watching it as I am doing something else which means I couldn’t concentrate properly on the pictures, which is the main point of it. If it’s a subject that interests you I’d recommend it, if only for the colour pictures which do feel completely fresh.

Stumbled upon it by accident.
The footage is not original colour footage (I doubt any exists) but appears to be "colourised" using digital technology.
There is a background music track of a modern composition (rather than original Cara el Sol or Ay Carmela!) which sort of gives an underlying threat sort of theme. I didn't mind it, but I could see it would annoy some. Mr Portillo only appears briefly in person at the end but provides narration throughout (over the music).
Content is almost all military, with the "home front" stuff minimal. A lot of the footage is repeated, but there is some very interesting combat action (a brief glimpse of what appeared to be a "pom-prom gun firing). There's also a lot of "identity the obscure artillery piece" all too fleeting frames.
The "colourisation" seems to have somehow matched tones or been done with some knowledge; the Nationalist uniforms are Green, while the Republicans have a motly assortment of browns and quite a lot of green. The Assaltos and militia have blue (as do the Falange) and the Carlists red berets.
I missed the first 6(?) Minutes and came in somewhere around 1937 ( missed any reference to the Alcazar, Jarama or Guadalajara) so it moves at a fast pace.
Lots of tanks (including what looked like an upgunned Panzer I ) and lots of different Ford trucks (why have manufacturers neglected these so consistently?). What look like green Opel Blitzes appear in the final victory parade.
There's also a hilarious piece where Franco prompts his daughter to "say whatever you like" to the camera and then clearly reads and mouths the fascistic script which the young child reads out.
Worth a watch? Definitely. It may convert you if you were vaguely interested and even managed to prompt this jaded aficionado to dig out his 15mm Peter Pigs (coincidentally having looked at them for the first time in ages just the other day).

Fortunately he isn't in it much.
From despising him as one of Thatcher's more objectionable disciples (2 weeks living on benefits in Newcastle and he thinks anyone can do it if they are sensible and budget properly....which of course is easy when you have an escape date), I'd come around to considering him as a bit of a clown (Great railway journeys).
Unfortunately he then gave his opinion on Brexit........

Jeremy Hardy summed it up best; "such good Socialist parents as well....what went wrong?" ;-)

Just think of him as Portaloo and remember that night at Enfield in 1997 and you’ll be all right.

And I did say apart from the obvious drawback...
