Sounds interesting, one to add to an over long list of book to read, Ta
What's the point of doing one period, when you can do them all.......... In life most people specialise so gradually they know more and more about less and less so eventually they know everything about nothing. I work on a broad front so eventually I'll know nothing about everything.

Interesting review Jonathan, and sounds like it shines light on all those other factors, like rivalries of political houses, and aristocratic repute, which might put one general or command decision before another.
Jonathan's reference to insight into political interference in German "professional military" decision making is a useful reminder that Germany itself, and others, may be guilty of fostering idea of Teutonic Military Prowess and stereotypes of 'efficient' Prussian Militarism; ahead of 'real politik' inside their forces.
I wonder how much such stereotypes contribute to other ideas, like that of only Nazi German soldiers could be brutal and commit war crimes; when my limited knowledge of the 'great War' in Belgium is of German brutality to civilians who might pose a risk to German interests.
But I will climb down from my soap box now, before getting carrieed away.

I think the jury is still out on Haig. Here in Glasgow he opened the Cenotaph in Georges Square to a very mixed reception.
