Vehicle ID required please

Post by granty101 »

Hello all,

Can anyone identify the vehicle on this railway flat wagon please?

Caption with photo says "Arras, 1940", and while there are British markings on the truck, it looks 'civilian' ...if that makes sense?

Many thanks in advance,

Grant

Probably is a civi vehicle. Lots of the BEF transport was taken up from civilian trade, famously Monty's command vehicle, bright red HP suace vehicle. Many prewar civilian vehicles were subsided by the govt on condition that the forces could use them in the event of a war. No idea what that one is, cept it wou;d be about 30cwt capacity.

The AoS marking is for an RASC Divisional Petrol Company so an impressed civilian GS truck is a possibility. Though the rear looks very much like a military 30cwt bodywork. Not much help.

EDIT - might be a requisitioned commercial Fordson as the E88W is similar?

The Commer Q2 family also included some similar COE models, mostly tractors but also some vans and GS types. Pity we can't see the front of the cab.

My money is on the Commer Q2......the cab and wheel arch match those on the tractor units......
