Tiger I

Post by hammurabi70 »

Does anyone have sources to know if Tiger Is were used after the summer of 1944 when they were present in Normandy? I have seen it claimed that they were used in the Ardennes but I know of no written source that confirms that and I thought that in the Bulge campaign it was only Tiger IIs.

Yes.
You could try some research. There are many books on the Tiger 1E.
There are photos

Schwere Panzer Kompanie Hummel operated Tiger I and participated in Market Garden then became 4/506 for the Ardennes campaign before becoming independent again.

The Tigers in Combat series are good for equipment and organisation of the various units.

Most interesting to see them in 1945. As I understand it, production ceased in June 1944 and given the life expectation of six months I had assumed that all the Bulge Tigers were Tiger IIs and the Tiger I was essentially extinct by then. I was interested to hear an American tanker express a view that he faced a mass of Tiger Is. Of course the odd Elefant or other exotic occasionally turns up in places one would not expect.

Not really surprising if you read about units and battles from the standpoint of the participants. For example there where 138 Panzer II (excl Luchs) in Oct 44 and 538 Panzer III gun tanks surrendered in May 45. Considerably more specialist Panzer III surrendered (HQ, OP, Recovery, Engineer, Tractor etc) surrendered. Just because it is old does not mean that the German army and SS units stopped using them. For goodness sake they used Char B1bis at Arnhem! And at least two WW1 British mk V in Berlin probably as a decoy or MG post.

Never heard that before Alan...do you have photos or documents?? I know some were converted and sent to the Balkans. Would make a good addition and add something 'different' into the mix. (Hopefully a new plastic B1bis will be getting released by ModelCollect in 2020...but I'm not holding my breathe)
